I have been primarily involved with painting throughout my career, which spans more than a quarter century. My paintings, many of them on a large scale, are abstract excursions into color and light, with the works on canvas tending toward the monochromatic and incorporating tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. The manner in which I illuminate the paintings is an integral element in the presentation of the work, and enables me to produce glowing surfaces of color and light. My interest in light has led me to experiment with changing light levels on the paintings, and in certain projects, I have created programmed sequences of variable light movements and configurations, the effects of which extend the visual experience of painting to include the elements of time, movement and change. During the late 1990s, I collaborated with architect Gil Beach on the design of “Gateways”, a prototype of a non-denominational meditation chapel integrating painting and architecture, incorporating a number of the large “meditation” paintings. Since early 2000 until the present, I have continued to pursue my interest in color and light on a smaller scale, concentrating on drawings, monotypes, small paintings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. The goal here has been to achieve similar effects as the larger paintings. In print making, I have employed a variety of techniques, including intaglio and serigraphy, with a focus on multi-plate color aquatint etchings, in both editions and as monoprints. Currently I am working on a series of miniature paintings on panels (5”x 7”) which correspond to the large paintings on canvas. These works are intended to be displayed as an installation comprised of hundreds of panels, creating montages of colors and shapes. |
